Wednesday
June 4 has been chosen as the day to start planting up the town’s
containers and beds to ensure a beautiful display for the summer, and volunteers are welcome.
Any available people please meet at the Masonic Gardens at 10 am.
You don’t have to be green fingered or even have green wellies, a
job can be found for everyone.
Coincidentally
the 4th
June will also be Volunteers Day in Kirkby Stephen when the
Volunteers Centre Eden is organising a showcase of local voluntary
organisations and providing information in the Market Square 10.00 to
4.30.
You will find an organisation to join whatever your age or
interests. Love to see you there.

Kirkby Stephen man climbs Everest
 Peter Brittleton
Kirkby Stephen builder Peter Brittleton climbed to the summit of Mount Everest
at 0200 GMT on May 23, 2008 - and you won't find many people in town who can lay claim to a feat like that! Full story here
Community plan launched
The Upper Eden Community Plan has been launched. If that sounds like something of a distant issue to you then think again - it's an important document that a group of Eden people have spent a long time developing, and it concerns all our futures, and those of our children.
One of the most important issues dealt with in the plan is housing. If rural life as we know it is dying, many people believe it's the lack of affordable housing that is killing it.
The plan is available at the Community and Council
Centre, but a quicker way to see it is to click this link . It really is worth having a look.

For the 765th thousand time ... ‘did the earth move for you?’. I went to wake my son on Wednesday morning and he said we’d had an earthquake last night about 1 am. Well I was fast asleep and didn’t feel a thing.
News reports said that dogs were heard to bark just before it struck and cats went into hiding. Our dog didn’t start barking until about 7.30 am. Was he feeling the after-shock?
I hear tell that Kirkby Stephen had its own earthquake in the Dent Fault in 1970, perhaps some of you will be able to tell us incomers what happened that day. It might make interesting reading. Email info@kirkbystephenonline.org.uk

Looking good
The fresh tarmac has been laid around the Market Square, so that’s just about it for the Enhancement Programme, as negotiated with the County Council. It’s been a long project commencing with the initial negotiations with our Parish Council who have done an amazing job of trying to get the best scheme possible on the parsimonious budget that was imposed.
There have been problems along the way, but
