Good King Wenceslas looked out,
(recent memories of Prague)
On the Feast of Stephen,
When the snow lay round about,
Deep, and crisp, and even:
It must be Easter in Kirkby Stephen.
Why anyone, except the ’ man in the moon’, believes it is a good idea to have Easter this early, has obviously seen one too many March Hares
As children swapped ‘Easter Egg Hunts’ for sledging, the 10th annual
Classic Commercial Vehicle Rally weekend with masses of exhibits at
Brough, Kirkby Stephen, Auction Mart, Co-op and Stainmore Railway site,
was underway.
Many had braved the weather even though the A66 over Stainmore had been
closed intermittently. Perhaps a little disappointing that a few
vehicles didn’t make it through the snow.
Kirkby Stephen was still buzzing with excitement as everyone rode up
and down on the splendid old buses with dedicated cheerful crews and
buckets. One of this year’s highlights was the 1932 Sentinal Steam
Bus gushing with atmospheric clouds of steam.
Our thanks once again to Will Hamer and his wonderful team for bringing
Kirkby Stephen alive on yet another Easter weekend despite the weather.
The Market Square had many, mainly local stalls selling jewellery,
garden statues, toys, books, china, cakes and tools. The Rotary
bookstall doing a roaring trade with its fluorescent jacketed members
enticing customers in.
The Kirkby Stephen in Bloom stall
Kirkby Stephen Town Forum’s stall was festooned with colourful blooms
raising awareness for their activities and those of our Kirkby Stephen
in Bloom and Garden Trail groups, volunteers are needed for all three
activities.
A Christian group on Saturday and a band on Sunday completed the festivities in the enhanced square.
The Tourist Information Office was very busy with Barry Stacey and
staff helping visitors with their questions and seeking information
including, where the nearest ice cream parlour was.
An art exhibition of paintings by local artist John Buckley accompanied by some beautiful pottery was popular upstairs.
Their window has been hosting a colourful display highlighting the work
of our Kirkby Stephen in Bloom volunteers and this year’s Britain in
Bloom theme of ‘Local Roots’.
A few of you may have noticed the larger ceramic egg that crept into
the display for Easter, part of the Cumbrian wide Jemima Puddleduck
Easter Egg Hunt arranged by the Town Forum with the World of Beatrix
Potter attraction.
Our Parish Church was beautifully decorated on Holy Saturday by a
dedicated team of talented volunteers ready for the Easter Sunday
services. Beautiful white and yellow floral displays everywhere and
the scent was amazing.
White Lilies donated in the memory of loved ones and Easter inspired
arrangements in yellow complete with decorative eggs. A traditional
‘Easter Garden’ on the steps delighted children on Easter Sunday
morning as did the Easter egg hunt in church after the service.
With all that cold weather, there was not a Spring dress or Easter bonnet in sight anywhere, perhaps next year.

Kirkby's Polar Express lightens the gloom
THE lights went on and, thankfully, not everybody was at home. Hundreds came out and braved the bitter winter weather to help Kirkby kick off the festive season on Saturday. The day had a Polar Express theme, and it couldn't have been more fitting.
Some softies said the weather spoiled the day. Others were more upbeat - after all, we do live in Cumbria, not Canberra, and you
shouldn't expect to be sunbathing in December. Not only that, after a
few cups of mulled wine at Kirkby Stephen East , who could possibly care?
The mulled wine was taken in the company of Santa himself, ensconced at the station to
