The Eastside Crew, made up of 15 members, mainly young people, formed
in September 2005 because they wanted to see a youth club in Kirkby Stephen.
Since then, they have been busy dealing with appointing a management committee, writing a constitution, identifying a building, planning alterations, receiving quotations, applying and receiving grants, obtaining planning permission and training. Not necessarily in that order but it you get the gist, a lot of stuff.
They have had a number of advisors which have been very helpful; these include a Community Police Officer and Eden Youth Work Partnership.
The Chair, Dan Pearson says “The project will be a great place to chill and hang out and best of all the “Crew” is made up of young people and very few old people!! So young people will have a say of what happens. The “Crew” will organise lots of cool stuff to do for all our members and occasionally letting the old people join in.”
The Alternative Constitution
It’s been produced for young people to understand, here’s some of it:
- Everyone’s welcome no matter what floats your boat.
- Everyone’s different - and we like it that way.
- We just all want to get along,
- Everyone that gets involved will have to follow the rules!
- Anyone who doesn’t will get a letter from us to ask them to a meeting where you get to explain what on earth you were up to!!
- If after you’ve said your bit over half of us still think you’re a plank then you’re out!!!
- We’ll get the cash by letting Chris ( Chris Turnbull-Allen - the treasurer) pull tractors in his pink thong (or we’ll pay for him not to!!).
- We’ll also beg, borrow (but not steal - Roly’s working with us!) and buy stuff we need and if we need to we’ll even pay for people to make stuff happen!’
What else?
Corrine Fairer is the current secretary and Rowan Sandell has the large title of public relations, marketing and promotions Officer. No comments about size please.
There will shortly be paid young youth workers, no wrinklies and many members of the “Crew” have received formal training in stuff like child protection, health and safety, mentoring and drugs awareness.
So we know it is dangerous to take stuff up a ladder and this should please the mums and dads.
