This is a new website, here to serve one of the Eden Valley's finest towns.
The site is under construction, but do have a look at some of the stories that have already been contributed.
Who is behind KSO?
At the moment the team is small, so it's taking a while to cover all the aspects of Kirkby Stephen life that will eventually feature here.
The site's creator, Tony Randall, lives in Warcop and lectures in journalism in Carlisle at the new University of Cumbria.
KSO is the first of a series of community websites he is helping to set up as part of a major project launched by the University's journalism department.
His first aim is to make it as easy as possible for people to use the
internet to further the prosperity and community endeavour of their
area, and you can contact him if you'd like to be involved at the sharp end, or learn more about the project.
Also part of the production team is Paul Batey, who is devoting time to making the site function properly, and adding the bells and whistles.
Their objective is to create the finest interactive community web site you're likely to find, loading in features such as video and audio, places where anyone can blog, forums where local people (and potential visitors such as holidaymakers) can share information and ideas.
To be useful, this site will be a place where people do more than just look. They'll get involved as well.
Tony has been busy (well, as busy as you can be in the middle of the holiday season) getting in touch with institutions such as our local schools, churches and clubs to find out how we can best work together to make KSO an important and beneficial part of local life.
It's easy to contribute
It won't be hard work, we'll make everything as easy as possible, the important thing is to make Kirkby Stephen Online work for the town and the villages around, bringing us together and giving us a focal point that everyone can get to.
If there is some local news that the usual media outlets might not have time or space to report, KSO can. If there's a local campaign going, KSO can reflect it. It will give the Upper Eden its own unique voice.
Have a look at some of the other stories on our home page, they'll give you a flavour of what KSO is all about, and if you've got a story you think should be on the site, tell us about it on an email.
