Royal visitor hits the pub
No one has ever doubted Prince Charles's firm commitment to his causes.
He was back in Cumbria today beating the drum for rural life. And where
better to spread the message that 'the pub is the hub' than at the
Black Swan in Ravenstonedale. Here's a report of the morning's proceedings.
Charles brought Hilary Benn, the environment secretary, along for the
ride. Officially the point was to show him how vital and relevant pubs
are to rural village life, but who needs an excuse when HRH asks you if
you fancy a pint?
We're glad he chose the Black Swan, because in the last few years it's been transformed into a smashing spot. Click here to see Ann Sandell's report for KSO on the pub that doubles as a village shop.

Understatement of the week? A fair few folk in the area (and around
the country) know livestock auctioneer Stuart Bell, and they'll be
interested to hear that he's carrying on with his work for
Harrison & Hetherington even after having reached his 65th
birthday. See this link ...

Easter in Kirkby Stephen
The thick covering of snow and bright sunny morning was glorious to
behold - if only it had been Christmas instead of Easter! ... more ...

Victory on the buses
On Tuesday 11th March 2008 the Cumbria County Council Cabinet met to discuss the
Transforming Public Transport - Consultations and Recommendations which was
agreed. Due to public consultation, feedback and information from drop-ins, it
was recommended that there would be no changes in the Kirkby Stephen to Kendal
service.
Thank you to everyone who signed petitions and wrote letters. Ann Sandell
