Sami Whitehead & Nicole Allison spread the word about the town's thriving hockey club
The girl’s team that won the Yahoo Championships Hockey
is a fast and furious game that everyone loves. Thanks to Deborah
Barr (the organiser of Kirkby Stephen Hockey Club) the town
has a club that runs every Monday night, in term time.
No
matter what ability or age you are everyone is welcome to come along
and enjoy doing some practice and playing some games. We build up our
skills by practising: shooting, passing, dribbling and using our fast
feet!
The
Hockey Club began running with senior coaching and then Debbie
started to invite different ages to come along.
Debbie
loves to watch people improve and everyone always gets better and
more confident.
Everyone
loves it when there has been a tournament organised. We often go off
to places to have loads of fun with matches and competing.
Debbie
holds under 11, under 13 and under 15 tournaments. We go
places that lots of people have never even visited before.
100 members
Not
only is there a younger group, there is also a developed team for
more advanced men and women. There are over 100 members in the club
and everyone loves it.
If
you are thinking of joining the club, just attend the Astroturf one
Monday night. You will need a pair of shin pads and some suitable
sports wear.
If
you have a hockey stick, bring that, but if you don’t there are
plenty of sticks that you can borrow. At the training sessions we do
lots of practice and we always end with a game.
Monday session times
5pm
– 6pm (younger members: under-11s)
6pm
– 7pm (slightly older members:
under-16s)
Cost
£1.50 per session,
or £15 per
10 weeks
